When I went to school in California, USA in the 1950's
and 1960's I had the choice of Spanish, French, German
and Latin. I took Latin and German both. for 2 years.
Today, my grand daughter here in Oregon, USA had her
choice of French, Spanish or Japanese. She is now 15
and VERY fluent in Japanese. She spends her spare time
and her summer vacation studying from college level
Japanese textbooks, and she watches movies in
Japanese, and reads piles and piles of Japanese books.
Next summer she will spend a few weeks in Japan as
part of a language program.
Clearly the opportunities are available, but it still
seems very few Amercians bother to learn another
language.
