That should've been a giveaway to the April Fool nature of the article. This
year, it was the decision of the People's Republic of China to phase out
Chinese characters and write everything in Pinyin by 2010. That would HAVE
to be the ultimate sellout - the world's largest nation abandoning one of
the world's oldest writing systems.
I myself had suggested using Latin (Medieval/Church, not Classical, as Ray
Brown said). But I'm not an EU citizen. And I wonder how the Greeks would
feel about that, likewise future member states predominately of the Orthodox
faith.
