It depends on the class of the particular verb. In this case it has an instrumental function (to be exact: such an object of "purpose" has to do w= ith the perceived usefulness of the subject in the mind of the speaker), for other classes it assumes various other roles. But not too many; the third object is not very common in Aroven -- it's pretty useful for those words which need an extra attaching-point, though, if the nature of that attachin= g point is inconvenient to describe externally, that is, explicitly (meaning = you have to include an explanation of the link rather than simply tacking on an -em).
