Brevity and clarity. "<a>" is shorter than "the letter 'a'" and clearer
than simply "'a'", which could refer to a concept type, concept token,
word type, word token, morpheme, phoneme or phone, and often will not be
sufficiently clarified from context (as I can vouch for from numerous
undergraduate essays).
