This gets rather complicated. Most speakers of the so-called dialects
write the same Chinese as the Mandarin-speaking majority: the only
difference between Taiwan and mainland China in writing is the shapes of
the characters, not the ones used. In Hong Kong, however, they have some
characters which represent local words, so the written text will not be
standard. In other words, the spoken language of Canton is the same as
that of Hong Kong, but the written language is the same as that of
Beijing!
