When Islam first spread through the Near East, most of
the eastern provinces of the Byzantine Empire were under
the thrall of the Monophysite "heresy", the belief that the nature
of Christ is wholly divine ("one [divine] nature"), not man and
God (the little-o orthodox belief) nor just man (the Arian belief).
Just like Catholicism as it marched across Northern Europe,
Islam incorporated elements of the native religions into its
customs.
