The Spanish is definitely "to the east", unless there's some strange verb
there where an object would take "a", and the verb meant "to leave" (they'd
usually take "de".   I can't think of one right now; I may just be making it up).
Afrikaans surely makes it sounds like "towards the east", doesn't it?   Hard
to imagine that a sister language could have the same structure and mean the
opposite thing.   I'd guess for Dutch it's "eastward", too.   For the other
two, I don't know.
