I'm not sure if this strengthens your argument or not, but I think I
generally almost only say things like 'forwards' and 'backwards' (rather
than 'forward' and 'backward'), but do add -ward(s) to just about any
noun (i.e. 'forward' I don't use, but 'bedward' I would, and probably
more frequently than 'bedwards', though if there's a difference of
meaning I'm unable to put my finger on it).
