Ah, I apologize then for using the word "speech". "Language" is more
correct. If the Kassi have a sign language (I'm not sure if they do or
not), users of sign language would be considered in the "sentient"
category as well. I used "mute" as I don't know a better term for
"non-language using".
A person who's lost the ability to speak but can write or otherwise
communicate would also be placed in the sentient category.
That's not to say they'd have no prejudices against deaf people, I'm
sure they would, given their views, deafness would probably be seen as a
curse, perhaps punishment for sin. However, deaf people would be
classified as sentient.
