If they're non-communicative, yes. I never claimed that they were a

Actually, there are some dialects that are even more restrictive on what
"sentient" means. Namely, "free adult", so that children (even speaking
children) and slaves are not classified as sentient.
Incidentally, one word for "slave" literally means "half-person"
