Anything that's paved is paved, no matter what it's paved with.
And why can't "spade" have the definition "old word for shovel"?
That's the first--and only--thing that came to my mind when I
read the first message.  Your interpretation seemed as bizarre
to me as saying that "bank" in, "I'm taking all my money out of
the bank, since its interest rates are terrible" referred to the bank
of a river.

At least, so it seemed to *this* US English speaker.
