Right. That'd be the technical distinction I mentioned in my original
post. But I grew up digging holes with a "shovel" - which made sense
since I shoveled the dirt back into them with the same tool - so that
distinction has never been a natural one to me. The non-pointed
shovels are also still "shovels" to me, btw; the kind you use for
shoveling coal in particular are "coal shovels".
