Names - have you ever read Lord Dunsany's fiction? There's an interesting
tale he wrote called "The Hoard of the Gibbelins", which starts off with:
"The Gibbelins eat, as is well known, nothing less good than man. Their evil
tower is joined to Terra Cognita, to the lands we know, by a bridge. ..."
and ends with
"And, without saying a word, or _even_ _smiling_, they neatly hanged him on
the outer wall - and the tale is one of those that have not a happy ending."
There is no reason why one should be stuck permanently to the image of the
world Tolkien made. Not when one can branch out from that by going back to
the writers of fantastic tales who preceded him.
Just my $0.02 worth - even if inflation has been playing heck with it ...
