I wouldn't say that. Every liquid product I buy comes clearly
marked with its volume in both fluid ounces and milliliters, and
many of them are exact in the metric rather than the English units.
Of these, the one-liter (33.8 floz) bottles of drinking water often have
"1 LITER" spelled out on them.
My personal usage is not completely consistent. I generally prefer
the "-ter" forms, but a small number of words wobble back and forth
between "-ter" and "-tre" depending on my mood, chief among them
"theatre" and "mitre". However, I always write the SI units as
"liter" and "meter".
