This example exposes very neatly just how *deviant* English is. The North
Germanic languages look much the same, and so do the West Germanic ones,
but English stands outside in diction and syntax. And this in an example
without a single Romance word in it!
BTW, "in school" is correct for English too; "in the school" would suggest
learning in a specific school already under discussion. Similarly "in jail" and
(in British E. only) "in hospital".
