Religious usages (perhaps no longer current)-- culled from a friend's Latin
missal years ago (in the original wording):
V. Virgin
VV. Many virgins
M. Martyr
MM. Many martyrs
SS. Many saints

For some reason, that use of "many" (instead of simply saying "plural")
struck our irreligious little group as quite hilarious and gave rise to all
sorts of new plural forms:

VV.CC.  Many veal cutlets (college dining hall fare)
MM.  Many muffins
PP. Many papers (as in "I have PP. to write tonight")
and so forth...... we were a weird bunch.
