There are three kinds of words in Spanish (and other ROmance languages):
those which descend from Latin, those which were borrowed from Latin
with only slight modifications, and those which were borrowed from Latin
but have been modified substantially. "Muerte" belongs to the first
class: "mortal" to the second.
