Well, Will Rogers (he of "I never met a man I didn't like") once said,
"I don't belong to any organized political party: I am a Democrat". That
at least is a major difference between the parties: Republicans enforce
far more of what a European would think of as party discipline than
Democrats ever will.
Otherwise, an excellent post, Tom. I would also point all of you furriners to
Mark Rosenfelder's _Traveler's Guide to the U.S. Elections 2000_ at
http://www.zompist.com/eguide.html, in English and French. Sample
explanation:
There are three stages [of the campaign]: _fundraising_, which
begins soon after the previous election and ends when the first
candidate withdraws for financial underperformance; _primaries_,
where each party slings mud at its own candidates till only the
nominee remains, and the election itself.
