Such was always the case for typed papers in college. And one side only.
Similarly, mss submitted for publication. Now that submissions to
magazines/journals etc. are mostly done on floppies, I don't know if editors
still want double-spaced, though I suspect for proof-reading purposes they
do. My last submission for publication was sent on a floppy, but even so
had to be double spaced.
