It was when I was in elementary school, tho I'm not sure if we used
pencils or (ballpoint) pens. I do remember that handwriting was always
the only thing that kept me off honor roll, except during the first
grading period of 4th grade, when my right arm was broken (I'm told that
someone else did my writing for me), and in 5th grade when my teacher
consistently gave me B- in handwriting because she felt it wasn't fair
to keep someone off honor roll *only* for spelling. :-)
