Whenever someone sees fit to write down a " new language" in India,
at least in the North, Devanagari seems to be the script of choice.
To be sure, India is pretty hopeless ground for knowing what is a
language and what is a dialect:  "the local languages change every 150 km"
is the rule.

Indeed.  The Unicode book mentions Awadhi, Bagheli, Bhatneri, Bhili, Bihari,
Braj Bhasha, Chhattisgharhi, Garhwali, Gondi (Betul, Chhindwara, and Mandla
dialects), Harauti, Hindi, Ho, Japuri, Kachchhi, Kanauji, Konkani, Kului,
Kumaoni, Kurku, Kurukh, Marathi, Marwari, Mundari, Newari, Nepali, Palpa,
and Santali.

This list, which is not complete, might conceivably be beaten by Hebrew
script if all the extinct Judeo-X languages were included.

I presume you are looking at charts.unicode.org now, or at the Unicode
book?  They both give a conspectus of the Cyrillic alphabet on one page.
