I would like some background on everyone's language, like who would have used
it? Where? and When?
Silindion is language spoken by the Elves of the Kingdom of Nolë Silinel.
This Kingdom is located on a fantasy Earth roughly where Italy and France are.
Silindion is derived from Common Silinestic, the tongue of all the elves who
came over the mountains before the second Cataclysm (a destruction of the world
which sundered the elven tribes, and produced the myriad languages that are
seen at the present time in the con-world).
Silindion's closest relatives are West and South Silic, which are spoken to
the west and south of the Kingdom of Nolë Silinel (surprising isn't it?).
Roughly speaking, West Silic is spoken where the Iberian peninsula and the
Atlantic ocean would be. South Silic is spoken where Morocco would be.
The Silindion language is divided into many dialects and two major registers,
or styles. The common people, from the elves of Silinestin, the capital, to the
human farmers of the Greenvales (Nerëalánë), speak Low Silindion. This is
separated grammatically and lexically from High Silindion, the language of the
court and religion. High Silindion is a language that is very austere and
musical (at least that's what the elves think... personally I think that L.S,
and H.S are very similar, and often become confused when writing poems, I chalk
this up to scribal error). Both varieties of Silindion have poetic variants.
Just cause you asked for background, I'll go a bit into religion, just a bit
mind you. The elvish religion has its roots in the ancient shamanism of the
elvish Kúri (or spirit-guides). Animism and Nature worship still play a very
important part in the religion. The religion is polytheistic, with an emphasis
on triads The holiest triad is the Moon (Lárë). When worshipped, the moon is
called Alárïe, and is subdivided into waxing (Nóna "Budding"), full (Níva
"Beauty") and waning (Sámma "Death"). The next highest god is Erélion (Moon,
or Evening-star), which, with the Moon and the Morning-Star, form the second
triad. To finish off, various types of priests, from nassándë (druids),
sántë (priests), nímë (keepers of trees),to nïe (marriage-priests) conduct
the various rites that make up the religion. These rites are performed in a
combination of High Silindion, and West Nindic, the sacred (and dead) language
of the Druids.
