That isn't an umlaut, it's a diaeresis. One says that the vowel is
pronounced (separately), the other says it's pronounced front or
centredly.
And get a Real keyboard layout that lets you type ä by typing
some-key, ", a :) A Real Real keyboard layout lets you send chars a-macron
and such (mine does, but I'm currently stuck using pine and so I can't
type Unicode chars into it).
