Come to think of it, I may have done some language invention before reading
Tolkien, as I got a Latin grammar in 5th grade (two years before finding
Tolkien) and was fascinated by the whole idea of inflected languages.

Me too, and this is a real curse. As in any creative enterprise, it is
important to follow one's own esthetic--but what if that drives you
inexorably into imitation?! This may be one of the reasons for my many
unfinished projects. Languages that deliberately depart from Tolkien's
esthetic, although I enjoy them for awhile, often just don't claim much
hold on me over the long run.
