Actually, I wasn't influenced by Tolkien either. I had this vague
awareness that he used runes, but my first conlang attempt was influenced
more by taking French, wanting my "own language," and reading Diana Wynne
Jones' _Fire and Hemlock_--more the idea of another secret world, since I
don't recall any conlangs in the book.
