No - Italian is _ape_.
But modern French, Spanish & Portuguese is from _*apicla_:
_abeille, abeja, abelha_ respectively.
(The Romanian _albină_ is clearly from a different source)
BTW the diminutive _apicula_ is actually attested in the Classical language.

'sright; it was a 14th century borrowing. It replaced the (north) French
_ef_ (<-- ape[m]), which was felt to be a bit short. Indeed, had it
survived, a modern plural _efs_ would be pronounced [e]!
