Seeing that terms like "European", "Asian" and "South American" have been in
use for centuries or in some cases millenia, there is probably some need for
them.
To take your example, most people living in, say, Brazil are probably happy
to be refered to as "Brazilian" in some contexts and as "South American" in
others.
