Hmm. I wonder why it's not as obvious over there? Maybe because the
short-and-quick communication style doesn't lend itself to digressions
like YA*PTs and ancestry? Or maybe I just haven't hung around there
long enough at any one time to notice.

True, but I think it makes a big difference whether it is the accepted
and normal style in a particular communications medium. Pseudonyms
are the exception here (though not entirely frowned upon unless they
fail to mesh in other ways as well), and real names are the exception
there.
