I assumed when I first read Steg's text that 'abolava' was 'avolava' since
I was reminded of Latin 'a:uolare'.  The meaning of the Latin 'to fly
away', I know is not right, since we want something that means 'hovered',
'was flying above'.   However, I'd hazard a guess this is a derivative of
'volare' (to fly) which was there in the medieval language, which is what
Ladino is derived from, not from the modern Spanish language.
