i've seen various orders used, altho the commonest was
:
1 -a- ( -a, -ae ) |puella|
2 -o- ( -us/-um, -i ) |seruus/templum|
3 -i- or - ( -is/e/C, -is ) |ciuis/animale/urbs|
4 -e- ( -es, -ei ) |res/?spes|
5 -u- ( -us/-u, -us ) |manus/cornu|
( i hope i've got 4 and 5 right ! )
i seem to remember they were always referred to by
paradigmatic words, examples of which i've given. so
rather than saying, oh yes, |fortuna| is a first
declension noun, we'ld be told, |fortuna| goes like
|puella| . . .
i always thought it would be sensible to arrange them
alphabetically : |puella, res, ciuis, seruus, manus|,
and possibly add a seperate group for consonant stems
like |urbs|
