Good question.
From the standpoint that the benefit of an animal's existent lies:
1. solely in its ability to ensure the survival of its own genes by
producing offspring, probably not.
2. in its ability to facilitate the survival of its species, possibly yes -
e.g. by acting as a natural form of birth control for a fecund species with
a low mortality rate while still providing muscle to bring in food.
