Viewed with the concept that self mortification of the person (physically,
mentally, etc.) increases the person's rewards after death, this could have
merit. I persionally question that such self mortification produces a
positive reward except when or where it brings enlightenement and/or
compassion towards one's fellows or a broadening of perspective.
