Hi, John,
Now that you mention it, I've heard (from other knowledgeable sources) that
there are no purely ergative languages. Now THERE'S a tempting challenge
for the conlanger if I ever saw one. If I were trying to make an
all-ergative language, I'd start with a long list of verbs, and a worldview
in which very little is considered to be under the control of some agent.
Maybe this approach would turn out to be wrong-headed, but that's where I'd
start.
Thanks for clueing me in on active languages; guess the other listers were
way ahead of me, but now I can have more fun reading all those active
language posts.
All the best to all conlangers,
Jim
