IIRC, the endings on Haus come from the original PIE noun/adjective endings
of whatever declension. The "weak" adjective endings come from PIE n-stem
endings (this derivation of n-stem words from other declensions occurs in a
number of IE languages, for various purposes). The "strong" adjective
endings come from a pronominal declension; apparently certain pronouns were
placed after adjectives in Germanic, similar to what happened in Slavic.
