Obscure? I have to check my Teach Yourself Japanese (unfortunately I cannot check my Japanese teacher, being 500km away :( ), but I seem to remember that in any case where 'no' was used to nominalise a sentence, 'mono' (or rarely 'koto', though I'm not sure of the later) could be used instead. So even if it wasn't a contraction of 'mono', it sure is totally exchangeable with the latter. Of course, I'm no expert on Japanese (and I have such a strong cold that I cannot think straight - not that I usually do that anyway :)) -), but it does seem like a good explanation to me. Japanese is so full of those contractions, so why not this one? Christophe. http://rainbow.conlang.free.fr Take your life as a movie: do not let anybody else play the leading role.
