There have definitely been studies done on the phonetics of
music/singing. I've never seen one, but I know they exist. I
personally have found that any given sound I can think of
exists in some song or another. I keep a list in my mind of
songs to point people towards if they want to hear some exotic
sound from a language they're trying to learn--all in English.
(The songs, that is.)
On this note, though it's not music, I was watching the NBA
playoffs this past month, and in game where the Miami Heat
were playing the Indiana Pacers in Miami, the crowd started
chanting (at some time or another), "Let's go Heat!" It was
then that I noticed (and it's probably occurred to others) that
*that's* the way to teach people how to do front rounded
vowels. Everyone knows the experience of chanting something
really loud ("Defense!" is another good one), and what I found
is that front vowels (especially the high ones) get rounded profoundly
when chanting/shouting. So it wasn't, "Let's go [Cit]!", it was
absolutely, "Let's go [Cyt]!" Same goes for, "[dyfEns]!" I'm not
so sure about the mid vowels. I'll have to listen to the crowd
more at [lejkr=] games (well, not *next* season...).
