ammend that to never trust bilingual dictionaries and
you'll be on safer ground. I've never found a
bilingual dictionary yet (of two languages I
sufficiently comprehend) without an egregious error or
two. Like that Romanian_English jewel that so
confused one of my students years ago. I used the
word "fad" in a conversation with him. He didn't know
the word. We looked it up to find the Romanian
meaning -- "homosexual". Chinese-English and
English-Chinese dictionaries are horrid little mine
fields full of misrepresentations which are the source
of a large percentage of incomprehensible things
Chinese students write in English.
