I guess partly to remind myself there's still a part of the world out
there that's a little farther from civilization than what I'm familiar
with. Humans have been on this world for only a small part of its
history. What I've been thinking of lately is the history of the
fictional worlds where my languages are spoken, and how the different
kinds of people spread from one world to another. One aspect of that
history is how life developed on the various worlds; I've been trying to
imagine the different kinds of animals that live there, but the demands
of "real life" can be a big drain on creativity. So if I can't be
creative, maybe at least I can learn something.
But why mammals in particular? I don't know, that's just what I'm
interested in these days. Back when I was developing Jarda, it was
birds. Maybe it'll be reptiles next, or fish. Or something totally
different, like mushrooms.
