I think there are two challenges when developing an editor like
this.

The keyboard interface, but that's doable, even if it means adding a
floating keyboard or character table, or an input method editor for
character scripts.

The greatest challenge is the rendering of the scripts, and keeping
that rendering interactive. It's not so difficultto merely draw
a vertical script with all kinds of embellishments (like Aniese -
still haven't finished that font!), but keeping it editable.

I know I'm not quite up to the challenge, but it might be interesting
for people to look at the latest SIL effort: graphite:

which offers a rendering engine that uses specially wrapped TrueType
fonts. They say they're happy to work with application developers.
Of course, it's Windows stuff now, but I shouldn't wonder if it were
portable.
