No, you don't. Please go to http://listserv.brown.edu/archives/conlang.html, and choose option 3 (Join or leave the list, or change setting). Here you have the possibility to disable the delivery of messages with tags like CHAT and OT. Of course, not all off-topic threads are marked as such, but it might help at little, at least.

There's nothing wrong with that. I think most of us get frustrated from time to time with the huge amount of OT messages. And of course, there is the somewhat worrying phenomenon that off-topic messages tend to provoke more response than conlang-related posts. On the other hand, for someone who spends hours a day reading Conlang messages and replying to them, it can sometimes be important to get a better impression of the "person behind the conlanger", and OT messages are undoubtedly helpful here.
