Exactly! So did it happen in French, except that the resulting [w] made
diphtongue with the previous vowel which later monophtonguised. But it is
still visible in the orthography, like for instance "haut" from Latin
ALTUS, or "paume" from Latin PALMA (I think it's the right ancestor).
