There are no discussions about the real phonetic values of IPA. X-SAMPA is a straight encoding of IPA in ASCII characters, so there is no ambiguity either. The fact that some people haven't memorized all the characters yet doesn't say anything against the validity of the system.

Those of us who want to be precise about the way their language sounds, and I'll bet that's a majority of the conlang community, will continue to use IPA and phonetic terminology. You're free to employ layman's terms for your own purposes, but if you insist on crying objection every time we others refer to IPA, you're not going to make many friends in the process. -- Christian Thalmann
