I don't know how common this practice is, but I have come across it. It
seems to me an eminently sensible reform, so I guess it'll not be adopted
;)

I believe Pontic Greek adopted a more phonemic spelling than modern
standard Greek has (which has, as far as possible, preserved the ancient
spelling).
