Actually, it's the y under the diaeresis that's the clever bit.
Basically, ÿ is the romanisation of the character (romanised ï)
(representing /i\/ and derived from Hebrew yod), wearing (in the native
script) a circumflex-like hat to show non-syllabity.
Er. Except i'm lying. ï is derived from Greek upsilon, ë /@/ is derived
from yod. So, actually, YHWH is spelled _DINGIR_ëhwh, (with a hat on the ë
in the native script) which is even less transparent.
