In the beginning (which was high school) I would carry a disk around with me
with both Mac and PC keyboard drivers and install them on any computer I had
to use. :) These days Dvorak comes preinstalled on just about every
platform, so it's much less of a challenge. Every once in a while I do have
to use a system where changing the layout is impossible (the terminals in
our university library, for instance), at which point I swear inwardly and
then hunt and peck. But it's really not *that* much trouble.
Really, IMHO, the only major obstacle to switching over is the period of a
month or two when you're getting used to the new layout--while I was
learning I went from quite a high Qwerty typing speed to about 5 wpm, and
typing anything was just excruciating (of course, I forced myself not to
look at the keys because I have that streak of masochism and wanted to make
sure I'd learn to touch-type properly).
I've got some "Switching to Dvorak" links stashed away somewhere, if you
want them...
Cheers,
Josh
