Oopsie... compelling evidence (namely, two other posts) suggests that
the verb is some weird passive form of "facere" rather than an active of
"esse". I initially thought of "facere" too, but not of the passive, so
it made little sense. Then I remembered that the perfect form of "esse"
was "fuit", so I assumed "fiat" could well be of the same family.
Ah well. It's always nice to learn something new.
