Can't go wrong with Oxford-Duden. It even has detailed
notes about things like the BAFöG, the Anmeldung, the
Abitur and other such things that an American or
British person would be unlikely to know or be told
about by Germans.
Langenscheidt's is okay, especially if you need
something you can carry around in your pocket all day.
As for me, I'm looking for a portable electronic
dictionary, with some way I can add or edit entries
(because no dictionary is fully complete, esp. in
specialized contexts).
Does such a fantastic device even exist, for a price
that won't spell the end of me living indoors and
eating every day?

I love Cassell's, at least the copy of the Latin
dictionary I 'borrowed' (e.g. 'stole') from my high
school's library three years ago.
Or, you could do what I do when a book's cover is
falling off: duct tape! I got my copy of Grey's
Anatomy fully bound in duct tape. I even made a little
strap to hold it shut. The book is now practically indestructable.
