These things happen. No phonetic transcription for English can please
all people all of the time. Just as now you have to know when to write
<cot> and when <caught>, you'd have to learn when to write 'caht' and
when to write 'caaht' (using an arbitrary transliteration). If you were
to adopt the Deseret alphabet :) (IMD, 'ah' /a:/ has nothing to do with
the sounds there called long and short 'ah' /o:/ and /O/, respectively.)

When it refers to 'long e', it doesn't mean the English graphemic long
e, it refers to the phonemic tense e of many English dialects (which
usually corresponds to a graphemic long a), which has a closer
relationship to short/lax e then short/lax a in many English dialects.
