My father did some genealogy on his mother's family and so
he had to deal with loads of photocopies (xeroxes?) of
parchments written in Sütterlin. Scary, that.

That's hilarious! "in einem Aluminiumeimerchen" ... Worse
than "Kommunikation". I sometimes write stuff in
Sütterlin when I'm bored, but I have serious difficulties
with deciphering it afterwards.
In Kassel in the pedestrian zone, there's a baker's
called "Schwälmer Brotladen", with the company's logo
written in Sütterlin. Embarassingly, the dots of the 'ä'
are on the last squiggle of the 'w'. On the bags and vans
with their logo, the dots are in the right place, though.

As for dots mutating to macrons, this is a common feature,
AFAICT. It's a feature of my handwriting as well.
