Hello,
> Tell us about it. What did you find out?
Well, my special task was verbal morphology (me being only a first year
student and thus a first-time participant in the fieldwork expeditions,
I mostly did the difficult formal morphology part - paradigms,
morphological word classes and such - mostly identifying the forms the
others couldn'r). What I found out was that Tundra Nenets has a
hellishly difficult verbal morphology. Of course I can't outscore Dirk
in terms of the size of the paradigm, but the initial assessment is that
a full paradigm (jncluding declensions of non-finite forms, which is not
strictly verbal, of course) of one verb can, when printed out, serve as
enough wallpaper for a wall at the department. (Legend holds that our
Head of Dept. has a full Alutor verbal paradigm as wallpaper at home)
I will of course write the report (the deadline is October 1), but it
will be in Russian. I might translate it later.
Pavel
